    The definition of a functional derivative may be made more mathematically precise and rigorous by defining the space of functions more carefully. For example, when the space of functions is a Banach space, the functional derivative becomes known as the Fréchet derivative, while one uses the Gateaux derivative on more general locally convex spaces. Klenk defines a non-truth functional operator as follows: A non-truth functional operator is an operator for which we cannot determine the truth value of the compound given the truth values of the components. 2) So how do we PROVE that an operator is non-truth functional? The current set of notes is an activity-oriented companion to the study of linear functional analysis and operator algebras. Whatever book you find, don't get trapped in the idea that functional programming is somehow limited to certain languages.

Pretty much all languages now have a lot of functional constructs -- they've become a staple of all programming.

You can find an overview of the various paradigms at my site, it includes functional programming. The book is Beginning Functional Analysis by Karen Saxe. It is aimed at undergraduates whose background is a basic course in linear algebra and real analysis.
